About the Role

The WordPress Foundation is seeking a passionate and experienced Community Manager to help grow, nurture, and support the global WordPress community. In this role, you will be the primary point of contact between the Foundation and the thousands of volunteers, contributors, and organizers who make WordPress the most widely used content management system in the world. You will work closely with teams across the open-source ecosystem to ensure that community members feel supported, heard, and empowered to contribute meaningfully.

As Community Manager, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of WordPress community engagement. You will develop strategies for increasing contributor retention, design onboarding programs for new community members, and coordinate with regional meetup organizers across six continents. This position requires someone who understands the unique dynamics of open-source communities and can balance the needs of diverse stakeholders while maintaining the inclusive, welcoming culture that WordPress is known for.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive community engagement strategy that increases active contributor participation by at least 20% year over year
  • Coordinate and support WordPress meetup organizers in over 100 countries, providing resources, guidance, and mentorship to local community leaders
  • Plan and manage the community track at WordCamp events, including speaker selection, content curation, and volunteer coordination for flagship events such as WordCamp US and WordCamp Europe
  • Create and maintain contributor onboarding documentation, tutorials, and mentorship programs that lower the barrier to entry for new WordPress contributors
  • Monitor community health metrics using tools such as WordPress.org activity logs, Slack analytics, and survey data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities
  • Manage the WordPress community Slack workspace, including channel organization, moderation policies, and community guidelines enforcement
  • Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications team to amplify community stories, contributor spotlights, and event announcements across social media and the WordPress.org blog
  • Facilitate cross-team communication between contributor groups (Core, Design, Polyglots, Training, etc.) to ensure alignment on community-wide initiatives
  • Develop and manage the annual community events budget, tracking expenses and ensuring resources are allocated equitably across regions
  • Represent the WordPress Foundation at industry conferences, open-source summits, and partner events

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in community management, developer relations, or a similar role within an open-source or technology organization
  • Demonstrated experience organizing or leading community events, meetups, or conferences with 100+ attendees
  • Deep understanding of the WordPress ecosystem, including familiarity with the contributor teams, governance structure, and release process
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across cultures, time zones, and language barriers
  • Experience with community platforms such as Slack, Discourse, GitHub, and WordPress.org P2 blogs
  • Proven ability to build consensus among diverse stakeholders and resolve conflicts diplomatically
  • Strong project management skills with experience using tools like Trello, Asana, or similar platforms
  • Willingness to travel internationally 4-6 times per year for WordCamp events and community summits

Nice to Have

  • Prior experience as a WordPress contributor, meetup organizer, or WordCamp speaker
  • Proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English (Spanish, Japanese, Portuguese, or Hindi are especially valuable)
  • Experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within technology communities
  • Familiarity with GlotPress, the WordPress translation platform, and the Polyglots contributor team
  • Background in nonprofit management or foundation operations

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range of $85,000 - $110,000 USD annually, based on experience and location
  • Fully remote position with flexible working hours to accommodate global collaboration
  • Annual travel budget for attending and organizing WordCamp events worldwide
  • Professional development stipend of $2,500 per year for conferences, courses, and certifications
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance for US-based employees (international equivalents provided for non-US team members)
  • 30 days of paid time off plus public holidays observed in your country of residence
  • Home office setup allowance of $2,000 upon joining
  • Quarterly team retreats in rotating global locations
