About the Role
WordPress.org Documentation is seeking a talented Content Writer to join our team on a part-time basis (20-25 hours per week) to create and maintain the technical documentation, tutorials, and developer guides that serve as the primary learning resource for the WordPress community. You will write content that helps everyone from first-time users installing WordPress to experienced developers building custom block types and extending the REST API. Your words will be read by millions of people each month and will directly shape how effectively the global WordPress community can learn and build.
This role sits at the intersection of technical expertise and clear communication. You will take complex WordPress concepts and translate them into accessible, well-structured documentation that respects the reader's time and intelligence. You will work alongside developers, designers, and community contributors to ensure documentation keeps pace with WordPress releases, accurately reflects current best practices, and addresses the most common questions and pain points reported by the community.
Responsibilities
- Write, edit, and maintain technical documentation for WordPress core features, APIs, and developer tools on developer.wordpress.org
- Create step-by-step tutorials and how-to guides covering WordPress development topics such as block development, theme creation, plugin architecture, and REST API usage
- Develop comprehensive developer guides that explain WordPress concepts in depth, including code examples, diagrams, and best-practice recommendations
- Review and update existing documentation to reflect changes in new WordPress releases, deprecating outdated content and adding coverage of new features
- Collaborate with core developers to document new and changing APIs, attending developer chats and reviewing Trac tickets and GitHub pull requests for documentation-relevant changes
- Establish and maintain a consistent voice, tone, and style across all WordPress documentation, contributing to the WordPress documentation style guide
- Respond to documentation feedback from the community, triaging and addressing reported issues, inaccuracies, and gaps
- Create content plans and editorial calendars aligned with WordPress release schedules to ensure documentation is ready at launch
- Analyze documentation analytics to identify the most-visited pages, common search queries, and drop-off points, using data to prioritize content improvements
Requirements
- 3+ years of professional technical writing experience, ideally in software documentation, developer relations, or a related field
- Strong understanding of WordPress architecture, including themes, plugins, hooks, the block editor, and the REST API
- Ability to read and understand PHP, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS code well enough to write accurate documentation and code examples
- Experience with documentation tools and platforms such as Markdown, static site generators, or wiki-based documentation systems
- Exceptional writing and editing skills with a proven ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly and concisely
- Familiarity with docs-as-code workflows, including writing in version-controlled repositories and using pull request-based review processes
- Strong attention to detail, including consistency in terminology, formatting, and code style across documentation sets
- Self-motivated and organized, able to manage multiple documentation projects and deadlines independently in a part-time, remote role
Nice to Have
- Previous contributions to WordPress documentation, HelpHub, DevHub, or the Block Editor Handbook
- Experience creating video tutorials or screencasts to complement written documentation
- Familiarity with internationalization (i18n) considerations for documentation that will be translated into dozens of languages
- Experience with API documentation tools such as Swagger, Redoc, or automated PHPDoc/JSDoc generation
- Background in developer education, including creating workshop materials, course content, or conference presentations
- Active involvement in the WordPress community through meetups, WordCamps, or contributor days
Benefits
- Competitive hourly rate of $45 - $65 USD, based on experience and expertise
- Part-time schedule of 20-25 hours per week with full flexibility to set your own hours
- Fully remote work — contribute from anywhere in the world
- Opportunity to shape the documentation strategy for one of the world's most popular open-source projects
- Professional development budget of $1,500 per year for writing courses, conferences, and tools

- Byline credit on published documentation and recognition within the WordPress contributor community
- Potential to increase hours or transition to full-time based on performance and team needs
